Berta Nieto has taught at Escuela Publica Canton El Zaite for seven years, nearly since its opening. She has watched students grow from children to young men and women, known students who were killed in gang violence, helped build the school both physically and socially, and served as a second mother to many of the young men and women in the community. She teaches sixth grade and ninth grade language and literature.

Recently the Salvadorean Ministry of Education has encouraged all public schools to teach English, but unfortunately the government has not funded this mandate. Berta Nieto has done her best to teach her students the little English she knows, but her English is very basic. Thanks to the donors of the Sister School Project, Berta has already completed three months of study at Escuela Americana's Adult English program in San Salvador and will continue her studies throughout the year.
