Hiring a Teacher Assistant

Overcrowding is the most serious pedagocial problem Zaite faces, because it is impossible to meet the individual needs of students when there are fifty students in a single class with only one teacher.

In order to meet the educational needs of these students, we've asked the older brother, Juan Alfaro, of one of our scholarship students to help the school in the mornings. He's studying at the National University to become a teacher, and has 11 brothers and sisters. He earns $140 dollars a month to work from 7:30 to 12:00 as a literacy specialist, aiding him in attaining experience, helping his family attain a steady income, and helping to alleviate the overcrowding of the school.

The assistant has worked with three groups of ten students who have been identified in 1st-3rd grades as being illiterate . A more detailed description of the assistant position can be found here. Juan has already helped more than ten students who were formally illiterate to read on the first and second grade reading levels. These students would have been left behind in the multitude of children in their large classes had it not been for the gracious help of our donors.
